Bookish Confessions

Hello there!

First of all, I love books, I think that is quiet apprarent from the content of this blog. Therefore I'm trying to treat them as best as possible but it's not always possible. Sometimes, I want to love the book so much but it's impossible because the characters are just annoying and the story is boring and I want to throw it out of my window. Don't look at me like that, I'm sure you know that feeling.

And so it's only natural that I don't treat them as I should... I mean, even I'm just a human although it may not look like that. So this is my list of bookish confessions.

1. When I don't like a book, I just don't finish it

I know, I know... even bad book need affection but there is so many books and so little time so it's understandable that when I don't like book, I choose not to waste time finishing it. At first, I felt guilty for abandoning them but now I think it's better than suffering. In my perfect universe, every book would be perfect then there'd be no unfinished book and everyone would be happy and there'd be unicorns dancing around us... uhm I got a little bit carried away.

2. I write into books

Okay, I don't think this is necessarily a bad thing and I absolutely adore books with anotations but some people can see it as a violation of a perfectly good book. Now, I'm totally against stains and torn pages but notes... that's my thing. It's just makes the book more personal and beautiful and it shows my love for it. I mean how can you after this argument see it as a bad thing? Tell me it makes you start writing notes in your book... please?

3. I tend to read books that have 4* and more on Goodreads...

...because I'm judgmental like that. I know it's bad to judge what I'm going to read according to rating of strangers but it works for me. The rating is there for some reason. Of course, I look at the synopsis because I need to know whether the book sounds interesting or not and sometimes it doesn't need to have perfect rating but well-written synopsis and I'm hooked. But again, so many books, so little time and after so many years of reading I have my ways of picking up books that I most probably will like.

4. I like to be the first one to read newly published book

Who wouldn't like to be the first one to read new bestseller and then tease all the other readers who didn't get to it yet? It's such a good feeling knowing you are ahead of someone. But even this has its downfall... you have no one to talk about the cliffhanger. That can be excruciating pain... especially if your friends are stubborn and don't listen to your arguments why they should read that amazing book right in that moment. Oh, the struggles are real.

5. I tend to read books because of their covers and how nice it will look on my bookshelf

Okay, this post is heavily aimed at my flaws... especially at my judgmental side. But hey, if you never wanted to read a book because of its cover then you're a liar. Or a really good person. Please teach me not to be shallow!!! When I see a beautiful cover on goodreads AND the rating is good AND the synopsis blows my mind then I get the copy and pray for it to be awesome. And if it isn't... well at least it looks nice, right?

6. I keep forgetting the names of characters...

...especially of the main ones. Really, it's strange because sometimes I can remember the name of heroine cousin's dog that died seven years ago and no one remembers him, but I cannot remember the name of the main heroine. I think it's because they don't adress themselves because it would look weird "Cathrine did this and did that..." and I like to think that I get into the story so much that me and heroine become one person. On the other hand I have no problems with remembering names of sexy and charming guys that heroine falls in love with.

Now it's your turn. What bookish confessions can you name? Do you have any or are you perfectly perfect, let me now I want to worship you.

  1. *raises hand* I RELATE. Well, I don't write in books, but I relate to aaaall the rest of them! omg particularly the names. WHY ARE NAME SO HARD?!?!? Like when it's 1st person, that makes sense because we don't see the character's name as much because it's all "I" and "we" and stuff. BUT THE REST OF THE TIME? I HAVE NO EXCUSE YET I'M SO BAD AT IT. XD And I definitely choose books based on pretty cover factor. Not even sorry about that. ;D
But I don't DNF. GAH. I just feel too unfinished if I don't?! I wish I did, though, because suffering through an awful book is. the. worst. XDXD

Thanks for stopping by @ Paper Fury!

    1. Names ARE the worst. Especially those exotic ones that I cannot even pronounce. How am I supposed to remember them? Though I like unusual names.
I just can't... I'm not very patient person and it I don't like the book I can't be bothered to finish it. I'm heartless. :D

  2. Being the first person to read something is so great, BUT THEN THERE'S NO ONE TO FLAIL WITH AND IT'S HARDDD.

Also the amount that I forget character's names is honestly pathetic.

    1. YES! The pain when you can't share your excitement is unbearable.
Glad I'm not the only one who keeps forgetting them :D

  3. I always feel guilty about not finishing books, so I am one of those people who tries to make it to the end, but I've come to realise that there's no point struggling though a book you're not enjoying. It just means I end up not reading very much, because I don't want to read that book, and then I'm neglecting all those other poor books that I do actually want to read!
And I am terrible with character names! Mostly if they're side characters though and they leave the story for a bit, and then they turn up and I end up having to flick back to see who they actually are. Plus I read a lot of fantasy, and so the characters often have weird and sometimes very similar names, so I end up hopelessly lost.

    1. That's exactly how I felt and so I stopped trying. I know that I can devote that time to book I love and that's much better alternative for me.
Yes, I know what you mean. Fantasy novels have strange, though the most amazing names, but they are so hard to remember. :)

  4. Gosh. I don't know about writing annotations on my books. I would feel so incredibly guilty. I haven't quit on a book for the last two years now. I think it's a good idea not to waste our time on books we don't enjoy reading.

    1. In the past I felt guilty too but now I feel good about it. Everybody is different so it's not for everybody and that's completely okay. :)
Wow that's a long time, you must choose really good books but I agree why waste time when there is milion other books. Thanks for stopping by :)

  5. You have trouble remembering character names too? I'm not the only one! Yay! It's so weird to love and book and characters so much and still not be able to remember their names. Then again, I forget the names of the characters in my own books all the time so I guess it's to be expected. I love the idea of personalising a book with your own notes and annotations, but I know I'll never do it. I like my books to look nice, and frankly my handwriting is abysmal at best, so I wouldn't dare write in my nice neat books! It's a really cool idea though. One day, when I publish my own book, I'd love to write notes through a copy of it and give it away to someone. I think that would be really cool.

    1. Apparently a lot of us are bad with names which is comforting. I thought I'm the only one too.
Wow that's really cool idea! That would be awesome and I think reader would appreciate the book even more. :)

  6. HAHA are these even confessions? I feel like this is every bookworm ever ;) Especially based on book covers. Because Bookstagram. Although I do admit I can NEVER not finish a book. I always make it to the end because I'm just stubborn like that.

    1. Well, then I'm glad I'm not the only one doing those things. :)
Well, at least you're giving the book another chance and you never know when the book starts to be good and eventually you may enjoy it. I think finishing books is the right thing to do. :)

  7. I also love to be the first to read new books! (I literally dance when I see the latest releases being delivered or in the library) But you're right, I then have to rant to myself about the ending, and my friends are SO slow at reading... I too buy a lot of books based on their covers so I can just stare at them on my bookshelf for ages. XD Love your post!

    1. That pain of not having anybody to talk to about the book is excruciating!!! And my friends are slow at reading too, we need to teach them how to read more quickly so we won´t suffer so much :D Staring at bookshelf is THE BEST. Thank for stopping by :)

  8. I never used to DNF a book because I always felt like I should give the entire book a go before ditching it. But now, if I am 50 pages or more in, and I am not liking anything about the book, then I will DNF it. There is not enough time in the universe for me to read all the books I WANT to read, and there is definitely not enough time for me to read the books I don't like.

I have also picked up books to read because of their covers. They can just be SO gorgeous sometimes! Unfortunately, it doesn't always end well, but I have found some pretty amazing books just because of their covers.

I don't annotate my books, but I always like it if I find a second hand book that has annotations. There is just such a personal feeling about it, and it means that the book obviously was special enough to the original owner that they wrote down their thoughts on it.

    Great post :D

    1. Exactly! I choose to read that big amount of books I actually like rather then struggling with book I don't.
Yeah covers are tricky, but they are sooo beautiful. I cannot resist.
You're absolutely right and because of that personal feeling I like it so much. Thanks for stopping by. :)

  9. I can totally relate to some of these. I RARELY read a book with below a 4 rating on Goodreads. I find their scores to be generally pretty accurate (though not always, since Jurassic Park has below a 4). And I also stop reading a book if it has not grabbed me by the halfway point. I guess what I am trying to say is, I am kinda sorta picky.

    1. Don't worry I'm kinda picky too because there are so many books and I just want to read those I know I will really like so I totally got you :)
